A Note on Terms
Hindutva-aligned. An actor, organisation, outlet, flow of money or unit of content whose activity, on the documented record, strengthens the Hindu-nationalist coalition: the organisations of the Sangh parivar, the BJP and its allies, and aligned religious, cultural, media, intellectual and diaspora actors. The term describes coalitional alignment, not motive or value.
Opposed. An actor whose activity strengthens the coalition that contests Hindutva, whatever its own framework: secular-liberal, Marxist, anti-caste, minority-rights, regionalist or internationalist. Opposed actors are not a single organisation and frequently disagree with one another; the Atlas counts them together only because each arena is measured as a two-sided contest.
Neutral, mixed and transactional. Units that pass the Atlas's neutrality tests are recorded but excluded from the two-sided share. Units with genuinely mixed alignment are reported separately. Transactional money, given to whichever party holds office, is counted as office-dependent.
Reading. A number from 0 to 100: the Hindutva-aligned share of power in an arena, a domain or the whole. A reading of 50 means the two sides are evenly matched. Throughout the book, readings are given to one decimal place; this is a convention of presentation, not a claim of precision.
RW and LW. The underlying studies reproduced in Part X label the two blocs RW (the Hindutva-aligned bloc) and LW (the coalition that contests it). The labels denote India's two competing socio-political blocs, not Western economic left and right. The studies also report GOV (pure public goods with no ideological content), cross-cutting, neutral and unclassified units separately.
Office-dependent power. The part of a reading that exists only because the BJP and its allies currently hold government. It is estimated by recomputing the Atlas with the BJP out of office everywhere.
