The India Power Atlas
Part X · The Underlying Studies
Chapter 52

News Media, Entertainment and Culture

News television and print, cinema and streaming, culture and awards.

The 6 figures in this chapter are reproduced from the report of Atlas research module M6, with the passage of the study that explains each. They keep the study’s own labels and colours: RW denotes the Hindutva-aligned bloc and LW the coalition that contests it (see A Note on Terms).

52.11.4 Content audit (Lens 4, §8H)

Mirror test (training-bias control, §12). 200 headline pairs were coded with the parties and communities swapped. Coders detected LW-favouring framing 95.9% of the time but RW-favouring framing only 75.3%, an asymmetry of −0.165 (90% CI −0.24 to −0.10). This is the predicted training bias: RW framing is read as "normal".

V15, trend. On the 47-outlet historical panel (Google News archive windows 2014–2023), the bloc-favouring slice stays small, under 15% of bloc-coded headlines in every medium-year, and noisy, with n ≈ 100–250 per cell. The data do not support a claim of a monotonic shift in headline framing after 2014. The structural change we can document is in ownership (Network18 2014, NDTV 2022, IANS 2024) and in the rise of the debate format. Historical debate and TV-website samples are NO-DATA before 2023: YouTube archives are incomplete and Google News coverage of TV sites is thin.
